What Results Can I Expect?

For optimal comfort, we apply numbing cream for 20 minutes before treatment. Immediately pre-treatment, the area to be injected is prepped with an ice roller to provide additional numbing and to constrict the blood vessels in order to minimize the chance of bruising.

Swelling is expected post-treatment, and is more pronounced if the lips or corners of the mouth are treated, as these are very vascular areas.

The swelling does have the benefit of stretching the fibroblasts (collagen producing cells) in the area of treatment, which triggers collagen production.

Q+A

How does Botox work?

Repeated muscle contractions – such as frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows – cause skin to furrow and fold gradually resulting in the formation of… facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults to help them look visibly smoother.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic FDA Approved?

BOTOX® Cosmetic was first approved by the FDA in 2002, and is the first and only treatment FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines look better in adults. It is used off-label in other areas, and the injectable can also be used to diminish unwanted perspiration in the underarms. Botox has been used safely with extremely high patient satisfaction for over more than 25 years.

How should I prepare for treatment?

Bruising is uncommon, but the risk can be minimized if you avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, and Excedrin) for two weeks unless medically necessary, as well as any supplements containing fish oil, omega 3 fatty acids, ginkgo, ginseng, or ginger. If you have a history of herpes simplex cold sores, and if the injectable treatment is used near your mouth, we may prescribe an antiviral to take as an adjunct to treatment to prevent an outbreak. Botox treatment is not advisable if you are pregnant or nursing, so please let us know about this when scheduling so that we can discuss the best timing of your treatment.

Other Uses of Botox

One of the most cutting edge techniques that Dr. Sherber employs is to pre-treat any areas on which facial surgeries are planned (such as facelift, blepharoplasty, cosmetic mole excision, or skin cancer excision) to works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults to help them look visibly smoother.

WHAT IS VOLBELLA® XC

Volbella is a hyaluronic acid filler that gained FDA approval in 2016 for lip augmentation and treatment of perioral lines. It has a silky texture that gives a marshmallowy soft result when adding volume to the lips or when restoring lip fullness lost with age.

As compared to treatment with prior fillers, this gives a longer-lasting result owing to the Vycross technology with multiple molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, and does not create as much swelling as Juvederm.

It is a good choice for those who are looking for a subtle treatment, since it is packaged in a 0.55cc syringe size (as compared to other fillers which are in a 1cc size).

OUR APPROACH

Dr. Sherber was chosen by Allergan as one of the first physicians in the country to inject Volbella in advance of it being available for purchase, so she has strong experience with this treatment.

When patients say that they are “overlining” their lips and want to return to the lip shape they had when they were younger or to augment their lip shape to achieve this look without makeup, Dr. Sherber will inject delicate threads of Volbella to support the border of the lip and to add fullness to the body of the lip so that it looks naturally plump and softly defined.

What are Dr. Sherber’s patients saying?

  • Great experience – Baltimore, MD
Botox/Juvaderm has made me look 10 yrs younger! Excellent results. Minimal bruising. Very comfortable experience with a very caring doctor.”

    – Kim in Pa (RealSelf)

  • “I started seeing Dr. Sherber for Botox, laser and fillers, approximately 10 years ago in Baltimore. I followed her to Washington D.C. when she and her husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Rad, opened a joint practice. Last year it was time to for Dr. Sherber to hand me over to Dr. Rad for surgical work. I had an amazing experience with Dr. Rad when he performed a lower face/necklift, chin implant, lower blepharoplasty and fat transfer. At the one year mark, I decided to return for a tummy tuck and upper arm lipo. This time I was smart to stay in Sibley hospital – 2 nights – after my experience with hard-to-control pain during the first 2 post-op days last year, when we were in an outpatient surgical center. I was treated very well despite being very needy with respect to pain control. Everything is still very swollen and bruised but looks good so far. I will continue to travel to D.C. for maintenance treatment and any new procedures with both of them. They are that amazing.”

  • “Dr. Sherber is a brilliant physician who knows how to make just about any woman look much better in the most non-invasive ways. An artist!”
