In preparation for the consultation it is important to note that bruising can occur with treatment, but the risk can be minimized if you avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, and Excedrin) for two weeks unless medically necessary, as well as any supplements containing fish oil, omega 3 fatty acids, ginkgo, ginseng, or ginger. If you have a history of herpes simplex cold sores, and if the injectable treatment is used near your mouth, we may prescribe a preventative antiviral to take as an adjunct to treatment. Injectable filler treatment is not advisable if you are pregnant or nursing, so please let us know about this when scheduling so that we can discuss the best timing of your treatment. Fillers should also not be injected into areas of actively inflamed skin. Dr. Sherber advises that there be at least 2 weeks between your filler treatment and any dental work or vaccinations, as this has been associated with inflammatory reactions to the filler.

During the consultation, our team will take high resolution photographs for your record so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. We will then ask you about your medical history, including current medications and any prior procedures. Dr. Sherber will talk with you about your specific goals and customize a treatment plan for you that might include Botox, other injectables, laser treatments, and skincare products. Areas that we typically treat are in the cheeks to correct age-related volume loss.

For optimal comfort, we will apply numbing cream 20 minutes before your appointment. Immediately pre-treatment, we will clean your skin thoroughly with alcohol and gauze. We may also prep the area to be treated using an ice roller to add additional numbing and constrict the blood vessels to minimize the chance of bruising. 

Several injection points will be required, depending on the area to be treated. This is a comfortable treatment – discomfort is minimal as Dr. Sherber uses hyaluronic fillers with added lidocaine that further numb the treated area as we go. She will start off by injecting a smaller volume of filler to see how your skin reacts before adding more. Since these products will become more hydrated once injected, it’s generally best to have an initial treatment endpoint that is slightly less than full correction. This method will help to achieve the best and most natural-looking results. 

All injectable filler treatments have the risk of inadvertent intravascular injection, meaning that fillers can be injected into a blood vessel and disrupt blood flow. Dr. Sherber will counsel you on certain higher risk areas for this rare but serious complication as there have been published reports of skin necrosis, blindness, and stroke.
