LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers use light energy to target melanin (fading dark spots, removing hair), hemoglobin (treating of redness and visible veins), or water (stimulating collagen for skin rejuvenation).
The new generation of laser technology provides skin-perfecting results that aren’t achievable through skincare alone. Innovations in fractionated non-ablative resurfacing (with best-in-class being the Clear + Brilliant platform of lasers) get skin to behave biologically younger, which translates skin looking younger over the years.
Dr. Sherber’s approach is to focus on skin quality and skin health first and foremost for her patients. As stated in Allure magazine, “Dr. Sherber’s laser treatments are out of this world.” She is known for gentle but effective treatments which bring fresh undamaged skin to the surface to improve skin quality by softening imperfections with little to no downtime.
Clear+Brilliant is a gentle resurfacing laser is also known as “baby Fraxel.” It reduces sun damage with each treatment, and visibly improves skin texture and tone. Clear+Brilliant is also clinically proven to make pores smaller over time and to soften scars, including acne scars.
We see that this laser treatment is now commonly written into movie and television riders for actors as they want to keep their skin looking even and their pores small on high-definition film.
Clear + Brilliant can be a treatment of the face alone, but Dr. Sherber often recommends including the neck, chest and hands depending on the appearance of your skin. This laser delivers a microscopic grid of beams of energy into skin’s collagen layer. The body then replaces this treated skin over several days, and in doing so there is a significant increase in production of new collagen and skin cell turnover: these are processes that slow with aging, and so the Clear + Brilliant treatment makes a meaningful physiologic impact on the skin.
This laser treatment is akin to ‘aerating the lawn’ as it enhances absorption of topical active ingredients applied post-treatment, so Dr. Sherber will apply customized post-treatment active ingredients that best address your skin’s needs. Studies demonstrate up to 17x greater absorption of actives for several days following this treatment, as compared to untreated skin.
As with many aspects of our health, consistency is better than intensity. Your skin will benefit from a series of these treatments spaced several weeks apart, and then maintenance seasonally or on a schedule best suited to your goals.
You will rest comfortably in our relaxing private cabañas. Depending on your treatment parameters, Dr. Sherber’s assistants may apply a topical numbing balm to your skin which has a cooling sensation. This numbing balm is custom made for our practice and is very effective and non-irritating to the skin. Dr. Sherber adjusts the laser treatment intensity to your comfort level and also to your skin’s needs. You may undergo treatment of full face, neck, décolleté and back of hands as these are all areas of prime real estate for sun damage. Dr. Sherber will guide you regarding which areas may benefit most to fit your goals.
Treatment takes only 10-30 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated and your unique needs. This is not a painful treatment, and you may experience some feelings of heat or prickly sensations. One of our patients says that it feels like “being licked by an electric kitten.”
Post-treatment you can expect to have pinkness of the treated areas, similar to flushing you might experience after a workout. This fades within hours and can be covered with makeup if needed. Over several days you’ll notice that your skin has a slight “sand paper” feeling which indicates that fresh skin is pushing out old skin as the top layers of skin are being restored anew. Keep in mind that this is a gentle resurfacing treatment and so serial sessions spaced every few weeks apart offers optimal results.
Recognized as a world expert in laser technology, Dr. Sherber’s treatments are focused on patient safety, comfort, and results. You can expect smoother, more even-toned, “makeup optional” skin after a series of 3-6 treatments.
Clear + Brilliant is a cutting edge fractionated non-ablative diode (1440nm) laser. Its target in the skin is water, which means that it acts directly on collagen and can be used safely in skin tones from fair to deeply pigmented, can treat off the face, and can be used safely in men without damaging facial hair follicles.
Safety is our highest priority and Dr. Sherber is renowned for her exceptional skill in safely treating patients with laser. She uses the Clear + Brilliant laser platform to resurface skin and to restore collagen in a gentle, safe and highly effective manner. Dr. Sherber is an expert not only in avoiding problems that can occur with overly aggressive laser treatment such as scarring, pigmentation and melasma, and she is highly sought after for her expertise in corrective work. In Dr. Sherber’s hands, men and women can benefit from Clear + Brilliant laser to achieve smooth even skin safely and effectively, without downtime.
Whereas the original Clear + Brilliant laser has deeper and more narrow beams of energy, Perméa delivers wider and more superficial beams. This means that treatment can be performed without topical numbing, and that more of the skin surface is turned over per treatment which results in a rapid glow.
Dr. Sherber is known for customizing this treatment with both individualized energy settings and cocktails of topical actives for extraordinary results. Per Allure magazine, “Dr. Sherber’s laser treatments are out of this world.” Dr. Sherber also discussed Perméa laser technology in Vogue magazine as she shared approaches for reducing skin damage after sunburn, and has performed live treatments on ABC News.
Clinical studies demonstrated that those treated with Clear + Brilliant Perméa followed by a topical antioxidant serum noted more uniform skin tone, boosted radiance and enhanced overall appearance.
Perméa is a camera-ready beauty secret since it gives a remarkable glow to the skin, and we see this laser treatment commonly written into movie and television riders for actors as they want to keep their skin looking luminous and even on high-definition film.
Perméa can be a treatment of the face alone, but Dr. Sherber often recommends including the neck, chest and hands depending on the appearance of your skin. This laser delivers a microscopic grid of beams of energy into skin’s collagen layer, at a depth that targets clumps of uneven pigmentation. The body then replaces this treated skin over several days, and in doing so there is a significant increase in production of new collagen and skin cell turnover and a fading of dark spots: Perméa makes a meaningful improvement in skin quality with each treatment.
This laser treatment is like ‘aerating the lawn’ as it enhances absorption of topical active ingredients applied post-treatment, so Dr. Sherber will apply customized post-treatment active ingredients that best address your skin’s needs. Studies demonstrate up to 17x greater absorption of actives for several days following this treatment, as compared to untreated skin.
Depending on your skin concerns, a customized mix of topical brighteners (such as tranexamic acid), antioxidants (such as vitamin C), hydrators (such as hyaluronic acid), and even retinoids will be applied post-treatment for enhanced results. These active ingredients will absorb much more effectively post-Perméa than if applied to untreated skin.
As with many aspects of our health, consistency is better than intensity. Your skin will benefit from a series of these treatments spaced several weeks apart, and then maintenance seasonally or on a schedule best suited to your goals.
Because no topical numbing or injections are involved, this is a treatment can even be enjoyed when a woman is pregnant or nursing.
Our team will take high resolution photographs for your record so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. We will then ask you about your medical history, including current medications and any prior procedures. Dr. Sherber will talk with you about your specific goals and customize a treatment plan for you that might include Botox, other injectables, laser treatments, and skincare products. Dr. Sherber is a board-certified dermatologist and performs all treatments personally.
Before Botox treatment we will clean your skin thoroughly, and Dr. Sherber will ask you to move your facial muscles to make various expressions so that she can map out your muscular anatomy. The injections are not painful but you may feel a small pinch in more sensitive areas. Several points will be injected, with the exact number of injections needed determined by your anatomy and by the extent of the areas being treated. Treatment takes about 5-10 minutes.
Dr. Sherber graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, where she designed and implemented a novel degree program in health policy focused on assessing and improving quality of care. She next attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she earned her M.D. degree. Following a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical research at Columbia University, she returned to Johns Hopkins for dermatology residency training and conducted research in scar healing and in disorders of abnormal collagen. She is now a Clinical Assistant Professor at George Washington University in the Department of Dermatology.
