Breast Aesthetics

A mommy makeover (tummy tuck and breast augmentation with or without a lift) is a great option for mothers whose pregnancies have stretched out their abdominal tissues and deflated their breasts.

Although many women want to restore their pre-pregnancy breast size, they are concerned about having silicone implants, either because they don't want a foreign material in their bodies, or because of concerns of problems associated with implants.

Possible problems with implants include:

  • capsular contracture
  • implant rupture
  • unnatural or firm feel
  • unnatural aging of the breasts
  • unnatural movement of implants placed under the muscle
  • double bubble deformity
  • implant migration
  • thinning of breast tissues
  • implant rotation (teardrop/shaped implants only)
  • mammograms are difficult to interpret
  • a rare lymphoma called ALCL (cancer of the immune system).

Recommended Procedures

  • A "Natural Mommy Makeover" (also called a "DIEP Flap Aug") refers to using your own tissue for augmentation. Instead of discarding abdominal fat from the tummy tuck, Dr. Rad carefully transplants it to your breasts. The transplanted tissue is called DIEP flaps. This is not liposuction and fat transfer.
  • By using your own tissues, all of the problems associated with implants are eliminated.

    Advantages

    • Very safe to perform in healthy women
    • No chance of capsular contracture
    • No chance of implant rupture
    • The most natural breast feel and softness
    • The most natural appearance
    • Your breasts age like normal tissue
    • No unnatural breast movement
    • Very low chance of ever needing cosmetic breast surgery again
    • Mammograms are not affected
    • No chance of ALCL (cancer of the immune system)
    • Dr. Rad guarantees the success of your surgery. If the DIEP flap transfer doesn't work, then you would only have to pay for the traditional mommy makeover. This gives patients the peace of mind that they'll always come out with a beautiful result.

    Disadvantages

    • Only healthy women who have excess abdominal skin and fat are candidates
    • Breast size can be increased only as much as the excess amount of abdominal tissue

    Things to Know

    • DIEP flap surgery requires exceptional skill - only 1% of plastic surgeons are trained in microsurgery, and only 0.1% (1 in 1,000) of plastic surgeons have the ability and artistry to perform this operation.
    • Dr. Rad is one of those surgeons and he is the only DC-based surgeon offering this operation.
    • Surgery takes approximately 8 hours to perform because it is a delicate surgery. However, young healthy women can safely tolerate this length of time under anesthesia.
    • Because it's such a delicate surgery, about 1% of the time the DIEP flap transfer doesn't work. This is not dangerous to you.  It simply means that you could elect to have implants, or have no augmentation at all.
    • Dr. Rad guarantees the success of your surgery. If the DIEP flap transfer doesn't work, then you would only have to pay for the traditional mommy makeover. This gives patients the peace of mind that they'll always come out with a beautiful result.

    How It’s Done

    • Dr. Rad makes a gently curving incision in the lower abdominal skin, he elevates the skin and fatty layers, and he carefully isolates the blood vessels to the tissue.
    • Dr. Rad transplants the tissue flaps to the breasts and restores blood flow by by reconnecting the blood vessels. The belly button is brought through the abdominal skin and sutured in place.
    • Dr. Rad places the flap tissue beneath the breast tissue (not under the muscle).

    Safety

    • In Dr. Rad’s hands, the DIEP Flap Aug is very safe.
    • Dr. Rad works with a board certified anesthesiologist and performs surgery in a hospital operating facility.

      What to Expect

      • You'll spend 2 nights in the hospital to ensure success of the surgery.
      • Temporary moderate discomfort is common and is easily controlled with pain medications.
