Endoscopic Brow Lift in Washington DC

WHAT IS AN ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT?

An endoscopic brow (aka endobrow) lift when the smallest incisions are needed and a patient does not have excess folds of forehead skin. In this technique a lighted telescope connected to a camera is passed through small incisions the caliber of a drinking straw.  Dr. Rad then detaches forehead tissues from the underlying forehead bone and then elevates the forehead skin upwards, and anchors the tissues using an “Endotine”™ device or with suture. The incisions are closed meticulously to leave minimal appearance of the scars. Endoscopic

Dr. Rad routinely performs brow lift surgery in combination with, or independently of, Face Lift and Open Neck Lift surgery. This 42 year old breast cancer survivor wanted to take the look of fatigue out of her eyes. She said that her breast cancer journey aged her face, and so she wanted to look relaxed and refreshed again as she did before her cancer diagnosis. Dr. Rad performed endoscopic brow lift, Open Neck Lift, SMAS Imbrication Face Lift, Facial Fat Grafting, Upper Blepharoplasty, and Lower Bleph + Fat Removal.

    Endoscopic Brow Lift Q+A

+ IS AN ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT RIGHT FOR ME?

The “endobrow” technique is best for young patients (30s and 40s) who do not have excessively wrinkled forehead skin which may require redraping via the “short incision” or the “coronal” technique. Dr. Rad uses the endobrow technique to give women a beautifully arched eyebrow shape, and to give men an evenly elevated eyebrow position. Dr. Rad also uses the technique to subtly shift the hairline up and back for patients with a “short forehead”, i.e. a short distance from the eyebrows to the hairline and who desire improved forehead proportion. If your hairline has receded and your forehead is long, then an endoscopic brow lift may not be the best procedure for you because it will lengthen your forehead further. Instead, you may benefit from the coronal technique where the forehead can be shortened simultaneously with elevation of the eyebrows. Finally, Dr. Rad can give patients a “permanent Botox” effect by accessing the currugator muscles, which cause frowning, and weaken them.

+ HOW IS AN ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT PERFORMED?

Surgery is performed under anesthesia for maximum comfort and safety. Dr. Rad first makes small, hidden incisions in the hair-bearing scalp just wide enough to allow passage of long instruments that are the width of a drinking straw. All layers of the forehead above the skull bone are elevated and the tissue attachments of the eyebrows are released. For women, Dr. Rad takes great care to release the lateral eyebrows so as to create a gently upward sloping eyebrow shape. The tissues are then repositioned upward and secured to the underlying forehead bone with suture. Dr. Rad pays careful attention to pre-existing asymmetries in eyebrow position and corrects them. Often one eyebrow is lower than the other thus requiring exceptional skill in order to achieve symmetry. In addition to eyebrow shaping, Dr. Rad often performs frown muscle weakening so that frown (“number 11”) lines are softened but not frozen. A drain is placed and it is removed the next day.

+ WHAT IS RECOVERY FOR ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT SURGERY?

Endobrow is not appropriate for every patient. Generally patients in their 20s to 40s will benefit most from this technique because younger patients do not have as much forehead skin furrowing requiring skin smoothing techniques such as the mini-brow lift or the coronal techniques. Hidden scars, good eyebrow elevation as well as frown line reduction and smoothing are the main advantages of this approach. Patients also benefit from the relatively short recovery of 4-6 days. If frown line reduction is performed, or extended release of the periosteum (the tissue cover over the skull) is required, then recovery can last up to a week.  Because every patient’s healing ability varies, Dr. Rad recommends reserving a few extra days as a “buffer” so that you can return to your normal activities safely and earlier if normal healing permits.

+ ARE SCARS VISIBLE AFTER ENDOBROW LIFT?

Scars are placed in the hair-bearing scalp. Therefore, they are hidden from view. Dr. Rad takes great care to ensure no damage to hair follicles which, if done improperly, can cause “alopecia,” or hair loss. Some surgeons use staples to close the scalp wound. However, Dr. Rad uses fine suture in order to precisely approximate the wound edges for best wound healing.  For bald patients scars from Dr. Rad’s brow lifts heal well so as to be imperceptible. No matter how small the incisions Dr. Rad’s meticulous placement and closure ensures optimal results without the evidence of surgery.

+ HOW MUCH TIME OFF SHOULD I PLAN AFTER ENDOBROW LIFT?

Dr. Rad is sensitive to your need to return to normal activities. One advantage of endoscopic brow lift is the limited recovery time. Typically Dr. Rad will perform surgery either mid-week or towards the end of the week and, if patients can take 2 weekends off (essentially one full week) then that will give plenty of time for full recovery.

+ HOW MUCH SWELLING AND BRUISING SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER ENDOBROW LIFT?

Swelling and bruising are mild to moderate. Mild swelling may occur in the upper eyelid region since gravity pulls fluid downward. With regular icing and moderation of activity swelling and bruising typically resolve in 3-5 days.  Every patient differs in how he or she recovers and the amount of time for tissue healing will vary. Furthermore the precise surgical approach plays a role in recovery as well. An in-person consultation is advised so that Dr. Rad can accurately determine the length of time required for your recovery.

+ HOW CAN I HAVE NATURAL RESULTS?

No one in Washington wishes to look extremely altered and Dr. Rad’s brow lift aesthetic is to achieve the most refined and natural results so that your eyes look brighter and more open, and not surprised or like those of another person. In fact, many patients who’ve had unsatisfactory results from other surgeons seek Dr. Rad’s skill and expertise for corrective work.  There is no substitute for skill and expertise: through careful analysis and planning Dr. Rad’s brow lift results are the best in Washington.
